I’m Still a DIY Girl— I’m Just Not Doing EVERYTHING Anymore

I’m Still a DIY Girl— I’m Just Not Doing EVERYTHING Anymore

Raise your hand if you can do your own mani-pedi and make-up and drywall patching and wig installs and... yeah.

A few weeks ago, we finally took our jeans to get tailored , which had been sitting on the to-do list for months now. Walking out of the shop with those bright pink tickets, a sneaky little question crept into our psyche: “Why did I pay to get my jeans tailored when I could’ve done it myself?"

This is a question many of the resourceful queens, the DIY baddies growing up, learned to ask ourselves.

Hear us loud and clear:

Just because we can do it all,, doesn’t mean we have to.

Let’s be real, like really real, there’s power in the beautiful resourcefulness that comes from taking care of yourself. However, the goal isn’t to exploit yourself into free labor.

Money comes and goes. Our time does not.

So if the question is “why pay for what we can do ourselves”, the better question is:

Why haven’t we done it ourselves yet?”

OOP.

Honestly, this act of delegation was more healing and grounding than we expected.

We trusted ourselves enough to accept help, and trusted in the skill of someone else to get us there.

When we default into doing everything ourselves, it reveals that, for one reason or another, we don’t trust our community to take care of us. That we believe we can only rely on ourselves to get things done.

Deep down, something’s telling us we don’t have enough. But that’s a boldfaced lie.

We do not have to carry the weight of the world on our shoulders—even if it’s the weight of our wardrobe. It’s okay to ask for help, and more importantly, to PAY for convenience, for peace of mind. There are people in this world who practice a craft, simply to share it with us. Isn’t that beautiful?

So the next time your plate is full, and you’re thinking of going D-E-Y, remind yourself, “I don’t have to do this alone.”
